Orange team facing the Green team!

It was yet another great MATS match hosted at the Rodmersham Squash Club in Kent. The first game kicked off between Italian Martina and Irishman Connor, a fierce battle between the pub bartenders both wanting to claim victory for their teams and with thunderous warrior roars that could be heard over the hills far away in Sittingbourne, it was ultimately our captain Martina that took away the first win for the Orange team.

Meanwhile, shivered by the screams next door, Lee and Casey were having their own battle where Lee was handed a can of whoop-ass as he struggled to get the upper hand over Casey who won by nearly double the points, resulting in the Green team’s first win of the day.

Straight after, Amo and Grant didn’t waste any time jumping on court to find out who is the best between both. While this is already widely known by most club members, Amo unsurprisingly took the win over Grant by 6 beautiful points, taking back the overall lead for the Orange team.

During that beatdown, Rosie played Marisa who was standing in for Green captain Hannah but due to ongoing injuries, Marisa had to throw in the towel halfway which led to Rosie taking another win for Orange. Shortly after, we were all eager to see Harlee play his archnemesis the dropshot king Greg, but due to unknown reasons he pulled out (some will say it was due to fear) and Christian stood in to face Harlee.

A very good game with Christian showing a display of his own very well executed drop shots and Harlee displaying his… usual bag of trash talking. Nonetheless, Harlee’s strategy worked as he just took the win after some good and close rallies.

The next game was played between Andy and Andrea; both worthy opponents to each other but ultimately resulting with Andy taking the win for the Orange team. As the evening progresses, the last games are being played between the top players of each team. We are spectating George seeing eye to eye with ex-club champion Steve and as the first half finishes, the scores are pretty tight. As the second half starts, little did we expect for George’s nerves to kick in as he could not return Steve’s precise shots. The gap between the scores became bigger and bigger and while nerves were being kicked in during the game, so was the bin at the end of the game which took the blame for George’s loss. Last top quality game of the night was between Finn and Jim who both played very well despite some mistakes that were made on court, earning them all sorts of names combined with the word ‘tin’.

Ultimately, Tin Quealy took the win over Tin Williams but alas, it was not enough to take home the win for the Green team as the final score of the night was 15-12 for the Orange team! All in all an enjoyable night with noteworthy events and long-lasting memories, not least of all the amazing chili jacket potato prepared by the club’s finest cook Karen. Here’s to the next MATS!
