Match Report – 23rd February 2023
Kick starting the MATs Spring season saw Orange team take on the Red team.
The first few matches were neck and neck, with Matthew taking the win by only 2 points against Rosie who didn’t let a fall stop her from giving her all. There was no holding back between James C and George H, with intense rallies from both players, and court dives from James within the first five minutes of the game which resulted in him winning another 3 points for the Red team.
The third game saw Kieran T, team captain for Reds, go head to head in a grudge match with Ethan who stepped in as a reserve. The levels of testosterone on court were undeniable, with neither player backing down hoping to win the title of the “alpha male”. With 42 points to both players and only 20 seconds left, Kieran just took the lead by 2 points, another win in the bag for the Red team.
With a Red lead, it was down to Linda to take home the first Orange team win. Despite a close first half between herself and Caitlyn, Linda’s win gave Orange their first three points of the season. Contrary to popular prediction, Orange team’s captain Martina played an entertaining match against Turtle who let the crowd get into his head, leading to another Orange win with only 5 points in it… and it was his birthday!
Another tight game between Christo and Greg saw hearts racing with a 52 point draw and only 15 seconds remaining, ending in another win for the Orange team. Intense matches were played by the number 1 and 3 players in both teams, which resulted in a Red team victory from Luan and Jason Taylor who both stepped in as reserves on the night.
With a 15-9 Red lead, and 1 match left to play, this was Orange team’s last opportunity to close the gap between the teams. Toby and Reece had to leave their friendship outside the court and go head to head for the last win of the evening. Despite a close game, this was a battle of who could outrun the other, resulting in a 25 point advantage for Toby leading to another win and bringing the final scores to 15 to 12 to the Red team.
Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with all players giving their all and some really entertaining games to mark and watch… what a way to jump start the new season!
